Logan's back at school for the first time in a few days. He'd gone to the dance last night, so he figured he should make an appearance, if only to see the lovely Miss Jackie.

She's not at school that day, and Logan tries to squelch a feeling of acute relief. She's hot, but a handful, carrying enough emotional baggage to open her own luggage store without any help from him.

The bell rings, and Logan heads to his locker, trying to keep his mind blank. It's best to think about Milliways-things as little as possible when he's in Neptune, he's found, or he'll start trying to talk about Lilly in a way that would land him in a crazy house.

It's harder to do than usual, after his conversation with Lilly last night.

He's so lost in thought that he doesn't notice Veronica's approach.

And approach she does. Using her shoulder bag as a battering ram, where necessary. The beautiful people of Neptune high utter protests as she pushes through.

"Logan. Logan-! Hey!"

Logan turns and groans inwardly. He's so not up to sparring with Veronica Mars today. But he masks his irritation with a smirk, as usual.

"If it isn't Nancy Drew," he says. "Coming to violently pursue me again? You can hold off - Jackie's not here today."

Logan is rewarded with a pantented Veronica Mars Look. "Who's looking for Jackie? Other than you, apparently, and I don't even want to go there right now, so: have you seen Wallace at all?"

Logan shrugs. "No, should I?" Logan asks. "You really oughta keep better track of your friends, Mars. They have a habit of disappearing on you."

"Or turning psychotic?" she shoots back. "What is up with you, anyway? What's with this hobby of turning up at school dances completely smashed? Collecting My Little Ponies just not cutting it for you anymore?"

"Not since I discovered GI Joe could blast the pony castle to bits," Logan shoots back. "It's never been the same since. And come on, school dances are only fun if you're fucked up. You should know that by now."

"Ah, boys with toy guns. The overcompensation starts young."

Cue the cute, friendly blonde. "Well you should know a thing or two about being fucked up, right?"

Logan rolls his eyes. "Think what you like, young lady, but I've got a whole cadre of women who say different."

He smirks. "You say that like it's a bad thing."

"Some girls will say anything to avoid bruising an ego."

Hands raised. "But really, as much as discussing the impressiveness of your boy-parts truly makes my day, I really need to know. You didn't see Wallace at all after the dance? And Jackie didn't mention anything?"

Logan shrugs again. "Can't help it if your man's got improper equipment, can I?"

He thinks back on that night, which is admittedly fuzzy. "Didn't see Wallace, at all. I was busy, you know. And Jackie was more interested in my collection of booze than in discussing a skinny basketball player who can't take a joke."

Granted, that same joke had him pretty pissed off, but Veronica doesn't need to know that.

She makes no comment on the 'equipment' crack. Not when she's got plans to visit Duncan in his hotel room after school.

(How many guys do you expect to want only you?)</small>

"Well, if you hear anything, let me know, okay?" She sighs, considers, then goes ahead and tells him. "He's missing. He didn't come home after the dance."

Logan frowns. "That sucks," he says. "It really does, but I'm not sure how this is my problem, Mars. You've made it pretty damn clear what you think of me."

She looks at him, levelly. "Shock and horror, Logan, but this isn't actually about you."

Stupid to have expected any kind of sympathy. This isn't the old Logan. This is the Logan who shuts down community pools and burns messages of hate into grass fields.

"No shit," he says. "In that case, let me get on with my day in peace. I'm not up for dealing with anything that isn't directly related to me. Peace, Veronica."

With that, he slams his locker shut and shoulders his bag, pushing his way through the crowd to get to his next class. He's got more important things on his mind than Wallace Fennell, who's probably just taking a mental health day.

Of course, his dramatic exit is considerably less dramatic, and not an exit at all, since Veronica is in his next class.

Oh Logan. Such a drama queen.

But Veronica of course has no choice but to follow him, shaking her head as she pushes through the crowds. The bell rings and she quickens her pace.

Well, yeah. It's fun that way.

They're late, so the door to the classroom is already shut, but Logan figures sliding in won't be too hard.

He opens the door, prepares a charmingly apologetic grin...and steps into Milliways.
